Expert Predicts Kate Middleton Won’t Make Another Public Appearance for ‘Some Time Now’ After Wimbledon

It looks like Wimbledon might’ve been Kate Middleton’s last public appearance for a while. An expert says the Princess of Wales isn’t likely to make another public appearance for “some time” following the tennis tournament that’s become a fixture on the 42-year-old’s calendar. Why? Because, amid her ongoing cancer treatment, Kate’s made it to the two events this summer she wanted to attend.

Wimbledon and Trooping the Colour were ‘key’ events Kate didn’t want to miss

Kate is “unlikely” to make more appearances, Katie Nicholl, a royal expert and author, told ET following the royal mother of three’s day at Wimbledon on July 14, 2024.

She went with her and Prince William’s 9-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, and got a standing ovation as they took their seats in the Royal Box.

A palace source, Nicholl said, told her “there were two key engagements that she [Kate] wanted to make: Trooping the Colour, and Wimbledon. Both of which she was able to attend.”

Indeed, Kate did step out at both events. On June 15, 2024, she went to Trooping the Colour, King Charles III’s annual birthday parade. It marked her first public appearance of the year following her March 2024 cancer diagnosis announcement.

Kate rode in a carriage and stood on the Buckingham Palace balcony with Prince of Wales and their three children: Prince George, 10, Charlotte, and Prince Louis, 6. Then, almost a month later to the day, she and Charlotte went to the Wimbledon finals.

She’s returning to ‘normal family life’

“Normal family life” was the theme of the weekend. While Charlotte and Kate were at Wimbledon, George and William were in Germany watching Team England in the final game of the UEFA European Championship.

“I think, having Princess Kate and Charlotte at [Wimbledon], William and Prince George over at the football for the final; we’re seeing a bit more of normal family life,” Nicholl said.

“We know it’s been a very, very difficult few months for the family, as Kate’s gone through her shocking cancer diagnosis and clearly some pretty grueling treatment,” she continued. “But I think there’s a real sense that things are on the up for this family as they finish the summer.”

Nicholl continued, saying now that George, Charlotte, and Louis are on summer vacation from school, the royal family of five will be headed for Anmer Hall, their country home in Norfolk, England.

“I was speaking to a source at the palace earlier, who have confirmed that [the children] are on summer recess and they will now just stay away from the public gaze,” she said.

“They will hunker down as a family, more likely than not at Norfolk […], their countryside bolt hole.” Staying closer to home is ideal for Kate, too. She “is not able to travel at the moment while she’s undergoing this course of preventative chemotherapy. So I think that probably rules out an overseas holiday.”

However, going to Scotland for the royal family’s annual summer getaway at the Balmoral estate will probably happen.

“I think it’s likely that we will see the family go to Scotland at the invitation of the King and Queen later this summer in August,” Nicholl said. “But I think it’s going to be low-key and very much below the radar. So I don’t think we can expect to see the Princess of Wales for some time now.”

The date of Kate’s return to royal duties is unknown

At the time of writing, Kensington Palace—William and Kate’s office within the royal family—hasn’t announced a date for the future queen’s return. Previous palace updates noted Kate wouldn’t go back to work until doctors cleared her to do so.

In June, shortly before going to Trooping the Colour, Kate shared in a social media statement she had a “few” more months of preventative chemotherapy treatment left, suggesting returning to duties this summer isn’t likely.

In the meantime, Kate’s learning to deal with “uncertainty” surrounding her health as she has both “good and bad days.”

As for future updates, Nicholl said that while information on Kate’s progress can be expected “at some point,” seeing her “smiling” at Wimbledon was a good sign.

“I think when we look at the princess,” she said, “we see her looking as well as she did, smiling, healthy, radiant, and we can assume that she’s now tolerating this chemotherapy far better than she was in the early stages and that she’s doing well at the moment.”

The Buckingham Palace balcony is no place for kids, says royal commentator

During an episode of A Right Royal Podcast, commentator Emily Nash discussed the opening of the east wing of Buckingham Palace. Now open for visitors to see for the first time, commentary between Nash, Emmy Griffiths, and Andrea Caamano turned the structure’s size, stability, and security.

The Buckingham Palace balcony has been where the royal family stands as the public watches from below. Emily admits the balcony is “lower than you think.”

Discussions turned to the safety of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Nash said she would be “super nervous” about letting her children step out onto that balcony.

“It’s much lower than you think. Again, you’re not allowed to step out onto it. But it’s quite deep, in terms of fitting several people in, behind each other,” Nash explains.

“The balustrade is not that high. And we were told that they use a small box for the youngest children to see over the top for the flypast.

“But, I have to say, I’d be inclined to sort of put reins on. Particularly with the lively one… not mentioning names,” she added, alluding to Louis.

Other elements of the East Wing new to palace visitors

Correspondent Emily Nash was given a special tour of Buckingham Palace and the new-to-the-public east wing opening. She explained the home’s rich history and why others must enjoy this previously off-limits area of the royal family’s iconic London palace.

Nash explains, “What you need to know about the east wing is that it was built by Queen Victoria. She kept having children. Quite frankly, she and Prince Albert decided that the [original layout] wasn’t quite enough for them.”

“They needed to furnish it. So they went to Brighton where George IV had his opulent summer house. The couple stripped it, and brought it back on artillery carts,” Nash said of the opulent furnishings, light fixtures, and portraits.

The balcony is at the end of the tour. Nash says this element of the visit is unique. However, visitors are not allowed to step out onto it as part of the east wing tour, a choice by King Charles to open up the royal residences to the public.

When does the royal family typically use the east wing balcony of Buckingham Palace?

Upon adding the east wing, Prince Albert, not Queen Victoria, suggested to architect Edward Blore that a balcony be added. Subsequently, Victoria was the first royal to step onto it during the Great Exhibition in 1851, starting the great royal tradition of balcony appearances.

The royal family website states, “Since then, Royal Balcony appearances have marked many occasions from VE Day in 1945 to Jubilees, Trooping the Color and an extraordinary Fly-Past by 100 airplanes to mark the RAF’s centenary in 2018.”

Other events for which the royal family utilizes the balcony are royal weddings. The newly minted bride and groom stand at its center, flanked by other family members. They traditionally seal their union with a kiss.

While Prince William and Kate Middleton were able to follow in the footsteps of his parents, Princess Diana and King Charles, by having their first public kiss on the iconic balcony, Prince Harry did not. That was because he and Meghan Markle married in Windsor, not London.

The Duchess of Sussex faced scrutiny in 2023 when it was announced that her podcast, Archetypes, was not renewed beyond its first series of episodes. Meghan and Spotify parted ways after the company said the podcast didn’t perform as expected. Since then, Meghan has re-signed with Lemonada Media — but that isn’t all she’s done. Earlier this year, Meghan announced a new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, as well as a new cooking show on Netflix. But one insider claims the duchess is feeling “pressure” to succeed.

According to Express, an inside source told Closer Magazine that things are “tense” at home as Meghan prepares to launch yet another new business venture. “You can just imagine the kind of pressure it’s putting on her and, by extension, Harry,” the source said. “If this show flops it will be a total disaster, and she knows it. She’s on tenterhooks waiting for it to come out and the stress it’s causing her is being felt by everyone around her, especially Harry.”

It seems that the cooking show, which does not have a name or release date, is coming out in tandem with Meghan’s new brand, but the lack of details is only causing concern as to how the show will perform.

Meghan Markle knows she has to find a niche and stick with it

Meghan is no stranger to lifestyle brands; she had her blog, The Tig, which was supposedly quite successful, prior to meeting Harry. She closed down the blog after she and Harry became engaged, but it’s no surprise that she’s remained interested in the lifestyle space. It seems she does have the means to launch a successful home and life brand.

With that said, it almost has to work. After the Spotify situation and the general controversy surrounding Meghan and Harry’s royal exit, Meghan needs to find her footing if she wants to be taken seriously as a celebrity. It’s certainly possible, as long as the new brand presents itself as relatable — but time will tell.

We can’t say we didn’t see this coming. Back in 2020, Harry left the royal family, and things with him and the Wales couple have never been the same. But earlier this year, William and Kate experienced their own massive struggle when Kate was diagnosed with cancer. As a result, the two had to make Kate’s health even more of a priority, and with little progress being made in their relationship with Harry, an insider claims the couple has decided to “consciously” focus on positivity rather than Harry.

“William and Kate are very consciously focusing on positivity and recovery,” a source told OK! Magazine (via Mirror), rather than focusing on the negative energy that is their relationship with Harry.

Ingrid Seward, a royal expert who has covered William and Harry for years, told Mirror, “[William’s] relationship with brother Harry upset him more than he would care to admit. But he found it easier to cut ties rather than allow himself to be continually annoyed.”

William has not seen his brother in ages. Harry made a quick trip to the UK in both February and May, and the two brothers did not get together either time.

In recent years, William and Kate have put a greater emphasis on their family. The kids are starting to appear in public more often, yet William and Kate very much still try to keep them shielded from the spotlight wherever they can. Also, the monarch’s former aide is revealing where they might go as dining out isn’t an easy thing for them.

The place King Charles and Queen Camilla may go that can provide what they need

Paul Burrell began working in the royal household when he was 18 years old and served as Queen Elizabeth II‘s personal footman. In 1987, he was moved to the household of then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana to serve as their butler. Burrell believes Camilla’s birthday will be celebrated privately at home.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, he opined: “I think privately, the king will give her a party at Clarence House or Birkhall and they’ll have people go up to Scotland … I don’t think there’ll be any public celebrations because it’s not a milestone birthday. Everything will be behind closed doors.”

The former butler explained that if they do venture out, it will be to one or two specific places because dining out isn’t “easy” nowadays, considering everything that has to go into it.

“Maybe they’ll go back to the Ritz again because that was a milestone when they first stepped out together,” Burrell said. “Dining out for the royals isn’t easy. They have to have a private dining room. And their favorite places are the Ritz and Claridges because they can provide the security, the lockdown they need, and that purple corridor, that special place that they can move to and from without too much interaction with the public or the press.

“Because when they dine out, they like it to be private. So that’s why those two places can offer them security and accommodations, which will be a smooth passage for them. Because they just can’t walk into any old restaurant, could they? No, it will be exactly far too difficult for them. It will be uncomfortable for them and it will be uncomfortable for the people dining with them.”

The king will ‘spoil’ his wife with what he has always loved to give her

Burrell added that in terms of presents, Camilla is likely to get a nice piece of jewelry from her husband.

“He likes to give her jewelry. I think he’ll give her something special,” Burrell said. “He may have had something commissioned for a birthday. He’s very spoiling, the king, and he will make sure that all attention is on Camilla. He likes to remind her that she’s queen. He likes to remind her that this is given by him for her service over the years to him, and this is his reward to her.”

Another former aide agrees that the queen’s birthday will be celebrated privately and that jewelry will almost certainly be one of Camilla’s gifts from the king.

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler from 2004 to 2011. During his time working for the now-monarch and Camilla, Harrold’s duties included that of housekeeper, house manager, driver, and valet.

Speaking on behalf of Spin Genie, Harrold said: “The last time it was a big occasion was her 70th. I wasn’t there but I remember the party because I could hear the party from my house. But normal birthdays are very private. I always remember her birthday being the climax of summer at Highgrove before the royals head off to Scotland … Normally, Charles would get Camilla a piece of jewelry [for her birthday].”

After revealing so many family secrets, some royal watchers pointed out that the two people who had been playing the victims were bullying the duke’s relatives who they knew weren’t going to fight back. The prince and former Suits star then became the butt of jokes and Spotify decided to end its partnership with them before a company executive called them “f****** grifters.”

In 2024, Meghan and Harry decided to stop using the victim narrative and completely rebrand themselves. Now though, an expert says they’re showing signs that they can’t find anything else to do.

Royal expert and author Tom Quinn noted that the duke is still involved with the Invictus Games but they don’t start again until the winter, and the duchess has been teasing her new lifestyle brand since February but that still hasn’t gotten off the ground. Therefore, it’s starting to look like Meghan and Harry have nothing else to do now.

Quinn told The Mirror that Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard is “essentially just a rebranding of The Tig, the brand she abandoned when she married Harry, thinking that life as a royal princess would be filled with endless deference and untold wealth. We don’t yet know exactly what the new brand will be selling, but it’s astonishing that a royal prince and his wife have been reduced to selling some of the things we have already been told they will be selling — marmalade, jams, and even dog shampoo.

“The new enterprise and Meghan’s widely publicised visit to the children’s home in Los Angeles are definitely linked and suggest that the couple are beginning to feel uncomfortable sitting around in Montecito with not very much to do.”

What the Sussexes do have lined up in the future is a big test

It’s not just Meghan’s full launch, fans are also waiting for the debut of her cooking show to premiere on Netflix. The description for the program says it “celebrates the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship.”

The Duke of Sussex has a documentary coming out as well about the sport of polo.

Meghan and Harry are both mindful that the success of those two programs will decide whether Netflix renews their contract, and a source who spoke to Closer says the stress of that is weighing heavily on Meghan and how her show will do.

“You can just imagine the kind of pressure it’s putting on her and by extension Harry,” the insider told the publication (per Express). “If this show flops, it will be a total disaster, and she knows it. She’s on tenterhooks waiting for it to come out and the stress it’s causing her is being felt by everyone around her, especially Harry.”

Wimbledon didn’t go by without an appearance from Kate Middleton. The Princess of Wales attended the final day of the two-week tennis tournament amid her ongoing cancer treatment. Highlights included a standing ovation and, of course, a dose of Kate’s fashion the public hasn’t seen due to her time out of the spotlight.

Kate’s 2024 Wimbledon outfit

On July 14, 2024, Kate—with her and Prince William’s 9-year-old daughter Princess Charlotte, in tow—headed to Wimbledon. The mother and daughter sat in the Royal Box at Centre Court to watch Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz defeat Serbia’s Novak Djokovic for the Men’s Singles title.

Kate, whose attendance at the annual London, England, tennis tournament had become the source of much speculation in the days leading up to the finals, wore a purple midi dress from designer Safiyaa for the occasion.

She accessorized with a tan bag from LK Bennett, one of her most worn brands, and coordinating slingbacks by designer Camilla Elphick.

Speaking to People about Kate’s Wimbledon look, Elphick called it something of a throwback to a tried-and-true way of dressing for the 42-year-old royal.

“It was very much Kate’s princess uniform in a shape that really works for her, and it all felt very familiar,” the British shoe designer said. “Although the earrings [from By Pariah] were a little edgier than usual, it was a really beautiful look.”

Kate highlighted ‘how important’ Wimbledon is to her by wearing purple

Wearing purple proved to be a significant move on Kate’s part. It’s one of the two official colors of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The organization, of which Kate’s patron, hosts Wimbledon. (The other’s green, which Kate wore three times to the tennis tournament in 2023.)

It’s also commonly associated with royalty. As Bethan Holt, The Daily Telegraph’s fashion director noted, it’s “the color of courage. Which could be a nod to what she is going through.”

“Kate has a history of choosing clever, whimsical themes for her Wimbledon looks,” Holt, who authored a 2021 book on Kate’s style, added. “Wearing purple underlines how important that role is to her. And why she chose this event to make her second public appearance of the year.”

The last time Kate sported a similar shade of purple came in November 2023. (Two months before she underwent abdominal surgery that would lead to her cancer diagnosis). She wore a purple pantsuit to deliver the keynote speech at the Shaping Us National Symposium.

Her style has changed in recent years

Fashion experts previously noted a shift in Kate’s style when she became the Princess of Wales in 2022. One even described the future queen’s choice of gown for a state dinner in the months following King Charles’s ascension as a form of “power dressing.”

Feminine styles in Kate’s wardrobe have taken a backseat to more business-like attire. Ahem, lots of pantsuits, and fewer polka dots, a print she wore often as the Duchess of Cambridge.

Now, with only two official public appearances under her belt—err, crown?—only time will tell how Kate’s health challenges of 2024 will, if at all, be reflected in her outfits when she returns to royal duties.

Although they are members of one of the longest-serving monarchies in modern history, the royal family is, at heart, a family. Therefore, they, too, share endearments for one another. This includes a sweet nickname for Prince William’s only daughter, Princess Charlotte, demonstrating their close relationship.

Prince William’s nickname for Princess Charlotte has French origins

The Wales family isn’t unlike any other family that uses sweet nicknames for its members. William was called “Wombat” by his late mother, Princess Diana. Kate has been known as “Squeak” or “Babykins.” Prince George goes by “PG Tips,” and Prince Louis is “Lou Bugs.”

However as the only daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, 9-year-old Charlotte holds a special place in her father’s heart. Thus, Charlotte’s nickname is quite endearing, and both William and Kate use it when they address their daughter. The moniker was made public in 2019 when the family looked at Kate’s “Back to Nature Garden” at the Chelsea Flower Show.

In a TikTok clip, William calls out to his daughter, and fans and the press note his use of the touching nickname “Mignonette.” In French, the word, derived from “mignon,” can have several meanings, including “dainty” or “cute.”

However, that’s not Princess Charlotte’s only nickname; Princess Charlotte is said to have several family nicknames. Yahoo! News UK reported that the royal offspring is also called an abbreviated version of her given name.

In school, Charlotte is reportedly called “Lottie Wales.” Around family members, she is just called “Lottie.” Prince William and Kate Middleton reportedly call their daughter “Warrior Princess” and “Poppet.”

Who is Princess Charlotte named after?

When Princess Charlotte was born on May 2, 2015, Kate Middleton and Prince William debuted their first daughter hours after her birth outside St. Mary’s Hospital in London, England. Her full name, Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, is a tribute to her late great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and late grandmother Princess Diana. Charlotte’s first name honors her paternal grandfather, King Charles.

Charlotte is the first royal daughter who can be in the line of succession for the throne. This shift came in 2011 after Commonwealth leaders, who had the late Queen Elizabeth as head of state, agreed to change succession laws.

Therefore, this change meant that Charlotte Wales would take precedence over Prince Louis in the line of succession. Under the old succession laws, the heir to the throne was always the monarch’s first-born son.

Talk TV host Jeremy Kyle spoke to writer Robert Jobson, who compared Kate Middleton to Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. Kyle stated that Kate “transcends class,” similar to that of two of the most influential women in the modern monarchy, and Jobson agreed.

“You are actually right,” said Jobson. “Obviously, what has happened in the last three months? Her journey has been remarkable,”

“She probably helps keep the monarchy in touch when they need to stay in touch,” he continued. “She’s helping a monarchy transition, and that is why I feel King Charles sees her as the daughter he never had.”

“I think he realizes just how good she is,” the author explains. “She is at the heart of this new, modern royal family.”

King Charles ‘realizes’ that for the monarchy to continue, Kate is ‘the bridge’

Continuing their discussion regarding Kate Middleton’s contributions to the monarchy, Jeremy Kyle told Robert Jobson that King Charles has come to a profound realization. He “realizes” that for the royal family to continue into the modern age, Kate is “the bridge” to link traditional and contemporary aspects of the House of Windsor to the public.

“There is a transformation into Catherine the Princess of Wales from Kate Middleton,” Jobson explains. “It was a difficult act to follow Diana.”

“But Kate has grown into the role of Princess of Wales,” the author continues. Before Kate, Princess Diana held the title from 1981 through her 1997 death.

Queen Elizabeth helped guide the monarchy into the modern age throughout her 70-plus-year reign. Princess Diana was its most famous face.

However, Kate Middleton is unique to both women in that she can cross that bridge by retaining many of the traditional ways of the crown Briton’s respect while behaving more modernly. Diana began that journey but was cut short by Charles, who always felt jealous of the attention she received.

Princess Diana broke centuries of royal tradition when she became Princess of Wales in 1981. She worked diligently to create a more modern monarchy despite Queen Elizabeth’s insistence on putting tradition first.

She interacted with the public more than any other royal prior and didn’t wear gloves. Diana enjoyed holding hands and hugging, creating a natural bond between the monarchy and the public.

“She gave the monarchy a jolt. She was determined to make it less remote and led by example on that,” said former BBC royal correspondent Jenni Bond to Reuters. Here are some ways, big and small, that Diana helped modernize the monarchy.

Diana was the first royal to pick her engagement ring. She eschewed traditional wedding vows for a modern twist.

Instead of giving birth at home, as per royal tradition, Diana had her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, in a hospital. Subsequently, she was her son’s primary caretaker instead of relying solely on royal nannies.

Diana insisted that her sons be schooled with other children at public school instead of homeschooling during their formative years. She destigmatized AIDS and normalized health issues such as eating disorders and mental health issues.

Subsequently, her sons William, Harry, and Kate developed the initiative Heads Together to help continue Diana’s early work in speaking about mental health. Together, they worked to break the stigma surrounding these types of health issues.

Kate Middleton continues to recover from cancer. She is married to Prince William, and they have three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

While the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) was making headlines around the world for her public appearance at Wimbledon with daughter, Princess Charlotte. Prince William was making some as well when he attended the Euro 2024 Final between England and Spain with their son, Prince George, in Berlin, Germany.

Fans all over watched the children and their parents reacting to the sporting events they attended. The matches both had drama but for William and George the end result wasn’t the outcome they had hoped for the Three Lions. And apparently such a tense match had the Prince of Wales in no mood to chat, according to a lip reader who caught William using an insult when a woman tried to talk to him.

As Prince William and his eldest child were trying to watch the game, an unknown woman approached them and appeared to want to speak with the heir to the British throne.

Lip reader Nicola Hinkling told the Mirror that “William wasn’t having any of it and said it ‘was already requested. When he sat down, he muttered under his breath the word ‘sausage.'”

William, who is president of England’s Football Association, took to social media with a message after the loss writing: “This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you. Onwards England. W.” And in a separate Instagram post with a photo of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis watching the game from home, he congratulated Spain on winning the match.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Slots Stanton explained: “William is a very competitive guy. He loves his sport, so he felt everything England were going through last night – especially when Spain beat them. He was present the whole time and couldn’t hold back on his involvement. This was later seen when he consoled the football team on the podium. He spoke to every player and reassured them while maintaining engaged eye contact, as well as giving them hugs.

“His facial expressions were genuinely full of condolences, sadness, and empathy. They had all come so far, so William wanted to support them in any way he could. William was gutted for them.”

The expert added that William really “put himself in England’s shoes” showing he can truly be the “people’s prince.”

“This appearance tells us a lot about who William is as a person,” Stanton shared. “It reveals he is empathetic, caring, and a team player. You can tell he connects with people very easily and can put himself in their shoes. When we saw him interacting and being this tactile with the players, William took on their emotions and felt them himself – which says a lot about someone.

“The fact he hugged them all shows not only how much the monarchy has grown – but also how William wants people to see him as relatable and someone who cares. He doesn’t want to be someone who isn’t seen or heard, he wants to be involved as much as he can as a royal. He wants to be known as the people’s prince.”
